Trading Up: TMX Insights Hires Wadden, Diaz to Return to Citi

TMX Insights, a division of Canadian Stock exchange operator TMX Group, has added Tom Wadden as its head of data science and analytics. Announced last month, TMX Insights is part of the operator’s cloud-based, real-time equity markets trading data and analysis application. In this newly created role, Wadden is responsible for applying scientific methods to deliver value-added, multi-asset class global data and advanced analytics tools and applications to a wide range of industry clients. A financial-markets veteran with more than 20 years’ experience, Wadden comes from TD Bank where spent the last 13 years in trading, operations & technology. He reports to Dominic Dowd, Director of TMX Insights.

According to people familiar within Citigroup, Armando Diaz is set to return as head of global cash equity trading. Diaz, an industry veteran, left the bulge bracket broker in 2011 to join hedge fund Millennium Management where he was in charge of global execution. At Citi, Diaz will report to Derek Bandeen, global head of equities.

Independent broker and fintech firm ITG has announced that Kevin Lynch, a private investor and former portfolio manager at Jana Partners, has joined the Board of Directors. Lynch will join the Board of Directors’ Capital Committee, which reviews the company’s allocation and use of capital in and among its various businesses and geographies and makes recommendations to the full Board regarding capital optimization strategies.

Gavin Phillips, the London-based head of sales trading for EMEA at Jefferies, has stepped down. No replacement has been named yet and Jefferies has not commented on his departure or a replacement. Prior to Jefferies, Phillips spent the last four years at Nomura, where he was co-head of European sales trading. He began his career as a sales trader at Lehman Brothers.

The Toronto Stock Exchange has hired Anthony Di Iorio as its first chief digital officer. The bourse is embracing the blockchain digital ledger technology and sees the addition of Di Iorio as a key to entering the digital ledger and technology space, according to sources. He joins Jean Desgagne, chief executive of TMX’s Global Enterprise Services, who was also hired recently to ramp up the exchange’s technology initiatives. Di Iorio founded the Bitcoin Alliance of Canada and also has formed a blockchain technology company, Ethereum.

The International Securities Exchange has announced that its chief technology officer Robert Cornish will assume the position of chief information officer upon the retirement of current CIO Daniel Friel, effective April 1. Thomas Reina, currently in the position of senior vice president, technology development, will become CTO. The technology management team has been planning for the retirement/switch since Friel announced his retirement last fall.
