ICE Has Record Open Interest Across Futures

Intercontinental Exchange, Inc. “The record open interest across our futures markets, including our global energy, oil, natural gas, and multi-currency interest rate markets, reflects how our global customer base turns to our markets for price direction across asset classes, with ICE’s deeply liquid benchmarks providing price anchors around which a matrix of thousands of related contracts trade and interact,” said Ben Jackson, President of ICE. “This interplay of pricing, transparency and liquidity allows customers to trade and manage risk when they want to, with confidence, flexibility and choice as they navigate interconnected energy markets and a complex rates environment. September highlights include:

  • Total open interest (OI) up 15% y/y, including record futures of 56.9M lots on September 25
  • Energy OI up 8% y/y, including record futures of 41.0M lots on September 25
    • Oil OI up 14% y/y, including record futures of 11.1M lots on September 29
      • Brent OI up 14% y/y, including record futures of 3.0M lots on September 24
      • Gasoil OI up 5% y/y
      • Other Crude & Refined products ADV up 23% y/y; OI up 19% y/y, including record futures of 6.1M lots on September 29
    • Total Natural Gas OI up 6% y/y, including record futures of 24.9M on September 25
      • TTF Gas OI up 4% y/y, including record futures of 2.6M on September 29
      • Asia Gas OI up 38% y/y
    • Total Environmentals OI up 6% y/y
  • Cotton OI up 21% y/y
  • Financials OI up 34% y/y, including record futures of 14.8M lots on September 12
    • Interest Rates OI up 42% y/y, including record futures of 12.2M on September 12
      • Euribor OI up 20% y/y
      • SONIA ADV up 5% y/y; OI up 81% y/y, including record OI of 11.1M lots on September 11
      • Gilts OI up 47% y/y
