Julie Feng, Electronic Trading Specialist, Virtu Financial, won Individual Achievement at Markets Media Group’s 2025 U.S. Women in Finance Awards.
What is your reaction to winning the Award?
I’m truly humbled and honored. It’s incredibly meaningful to be recognized among such inspiring women in finance. I’m also deeply grateful for all the mentors and colleagues I’ve had the chance to work with over the years—their guidance and support have been such an important part of my journey.
Looking back, what key decisions or turning points do you think led to this recognition?
I’ve always pursued opportunities to take on new responsibilities and step outside my comfort zone—whether it was learning new product areas, supporting new regions, or taking on roles that stretched me. As the industry has evolved, I’ve made it a priority to stay curious, understand the drivers of growth, and adapt quickly. Each of those moments pushed me to grow and they’ve been key turning points in my career.
What qualities or skills have helped you succeed in your role as an Electronic Trading Specialist?
I think what’s helped me succeed most as an Electronic Trading Specialist is balancing technical expertise with clear communication. I always make it a priority to really understand our clients’ needs so I can provide solutions that work for them.
Communication is just as important as technical skill. In electronic trading, things move fast, so being proactive, clear, and transparent is key—it helps build trust and strong relationships with clients.
What advice would you give to young women considering a career in trading and financial markets?
It’s critical to always be curious and learn as much as you can. The industry is always changing, and it’s important to keep up with those changes. Look for mentorship among your colleagues and in other groups. Never be afraid to ask questions. The industry can seem intimidating at first, but everyone starts out like a deer in headlights!
