Markets Media Group’s second-annual Global Markets Choice Awards will be held Thursday, June 4, 2026 at the Central Park Boathouse in New York.
The Markets Choice Awards launched in 2013 as an event to recognize and celebrate the best of the best in capital markets trading and technology. The Markets Choice Awards was rebranded to the Global Markets Choice Awards in 2025 to more closely align with the globalization of markets.
Ahead of this year’s GMCAs, we are featuring retrospectives of select past award winners.
Larry Thompson was recognized with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Markets Choice Awards in 2017.
A leading voice in market structure and regulation, Larry held senior roles at the The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC) Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC), including Vice Chairman, and previously served as General Counsel at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Across both roles, he helped shape the regulatory and operational framework underpinning modern financial markets.
During his time at DTCC, Larry played a key role in navigating several of the most challenging periods in recent financial history. In the aftermath of 9/11, he served as a chief liaison with the New York City Office of Emergency Management and state government officials, helping to maintain critical market operations. He also helped guide the organization through the 2008 global financial crisis and the disruption caused by Superstorm Sandy.
In a 2017 Markets Media interview, Larry emphasized the importance of staying open to different paths and perspectives, advice that reflects the way his own career evolved across both regulatory and market infrastructure roles.
Larry’s influence can still be seen across clearing, regulation, and the broader evolution of market structure.
He is currently Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Federal Home Loan Bank of New York.
