HSBC Names Stablecoin ‘HSBC Redcoin’
  • Survey Shows 74 Per Cent Recognise a Stablecoin Use Case
  • Starting with P2P and P2M – Scaling with Trust

HSBC unveiled the official name of its forthcoming stablecoin: HSBC RedCoin. The brand reveal is backed by a new survey of over 1,000 local customers, showing a market that is already engaged and ready.

Among the survey respondents, 74 per cent recognise at least one stablecoin use case. Leading the pack is digital asset trading and tokenised investments (57 per cent), followed closely by person-to-person transfers (53 per cent), cross-border remittances (52 per cent), and merchant payments (52 per cent). On core understanding, 60 per cent correctly defined a stablecoin as a fiat-backed digital asset. However, some differences in understanding remain: 26 per cent assumed stablecoins were government-issued, while 10 per cent viewed them as interest-bearing—a feature not included in Hong Kong’s current regulatory framework.

“Today, we are naming our Hong Kong stablecoin to reflect our heritage: HSBC RedCoin,” said Maggie Ng, Chief Executive Officer, Hong Kong and Head of Retail Banking and Wealth, Hong Kong, HSBC. “Launching our coin is just the beginning. Our goal is to support Hong Kong’s financial innovation, underpinned by the security, trust and simplicity that define HSBC.”

While demand for stablecoins is clear, customer caution persists regarding security, fraud, and regulatory clarity. When asked what would build their confidence, respondents cited fraud protection (53 per cent), seamless conversion to cash (51 per cent), and reserve transparency (39 per cent). More importantly, stronger regulatory clarity (62 per cent) and enhanced education (55 per cent) emerged as the most powerful confidence-boosters.

These findings support a phased rollout, beginning with straightforward, everyday use cases – such as person-to-person (P2P) and person-to-merchant (P2M) payments – before soon expanding to wholesale corporate and institutional use cases, aligned with Hong Kong’s evolving digital asset and currency landscape. Concurrently, HSBC will launch a comprehensive educational series for the general public in Hong Kong, focused on scam prevention and transparent redemption mechanisms, on its official banking apps, website and social media platforms.

“This survey confirms the strong interest amongst Hongkongers in embracing digital assets,” Ng added. “HSBC RedCoin isn’t a leap into the unknown—it’s a natural next step. Our education series will ensure every customer feels equipped and confident to join the journey.”
