TRADING UP: Shay Joins Nasdaq From Virtu; BTIG Adds Silver and McSweeney

Macquarie Group appointed William Dobson as managing director and Head of Corporate Credit Trading in Macquarie Capital’s Credit Sales and Trading group. Dobson is charged with trading leveraged loans and high yield bonds and based in the firm’s New York office. A veteran with over 25 years of  experience in leveraged loan trading and syndication, Dobson was most recently with Deutsche Bank, where he was co-head of the U.S. Loan Trading practice and oversaw daily cash loan trading activities with the firm’s sales force and loan market investors. Prior to Deutsche Bank, he was employed with Goldman Sachs, where he was responsible for Par Loan trading activity in a number of industry sectors. He has also worked at First Union/Wachovia and Bear Stearns, Bank of Montreal, Banque Paribas and Sanwa Bank Limited.

Exchange operator Nasdaq has been busy hiring across the company. The most recent hire is the appointment of John Shay as senior vice president and global head of fixed income and commodities. Shay will report to Hans-Ole Jochumsen, president, Nasdaq. Shay, who has more than 30 years of experience in the financial services industry will be based in New York and will join Nasdaq October 11, 2016. Most recently, Shay served as senior vice president for global markets at Virtu Financial, where he was responsible for managing outside venue, vendor and trading relationships, focusing on fixed income, commodities, and currencies.

Academy Securities, a registered broker-dealer certified Disabled Veteran Business Enterprise and Minority Business Enterprise has hired Jeremy Traska as a director in debt capital markets. At Academy, Traska’s areas of concentration will include global power, utilities, energy and structured products. He brings 22 years experience in the financial services industry, including senior management leadership positions in investment grade and high yield capital markets and research with a focus on the power, utility, energy and chemicals sectors. Previously, he spent the last four years at Drexel Hamilton, where he was a director in capital markets. Prior to working at Drexel Hamilton, he worked at firms such as Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank, Cohen & Steers and Oppenheimer & Co. with responsibilities ranging from capital markets and advisory to investment grade and high yield credit research.

Citigroup Inc.’s head of execution for the Americas, Dan Sanders, has left after 16 years at the lender, according to people with knowledge of the move. Dan Keegan and Murray Roos have been making changes to the equities division since taking over as co-heads earlier this year, adding traders and investing more money in the business.

Agency broker BTIG added sales traders John Silver and Andrew McSweeney to its foreign exchange and interest rates teams. Silver joined as managing director of foreign exchange McSweeney also as a  managing director of interest rates.

Silver has nearly 30 years of industry experience across fixed income, currency and commodities. Prior to BTIG, he was an executive director of foreign exchange at Nomura. Previously, he held similar roles within the fx groups at Deutsche Bank, Morgan Stanley and Lehman Brothers. McSweeney has over 20 years of experience in U.S. Treasury products. Prior to BTIG, he was a senior vice president of U.S. Treasuries at Credit Agricole Securities. Previously, he was a managing director at Mizuho Securities, Credit Suisse and Nomura. Earlier in his career, he spent 16 years at Lehman Brothers on the U.S. Treasury and financing desks.

Liquidnet has expanded its execution and quantitative services (EQS) team with two senior hires. Gareth Exton, who was head of transaction cost analysis (TCA) in Europe at Bank of America Merrill Lynch, is now going to head up the agency broker’s execution consulting at Liquidnet, focusing on its TCA in equities and fixed income. Mickey Senic, who was previously an institutional sales trader at Natixis, also joined as a sales trader across high touch, program and algorithmic trading. Both will report to Liquidnet’s head of EQS, Chris Jackson.

Monica Summerville has joined TABB Group as senior analyst supporting its financial technology research and advisory services division. Summerville a professional with more than 20 years of industry experience, has held senior positions on both the buy and sell-side, as well as work with leading consulting firms and as a U.S. retail broker. Her previous roles include broker services for J&W Seligman Investment Management, as well as stints at ABN Amro and Jordan & Jordan. She will be based in London and reports to Terry Roche, principal and head of fintech research at TABB.

Online data platform Quandl has appointed data industry veteran Dale Richards to its board of directors, to leverage his years of expertise to help the company grow its business and data assets. Richards, who has served as an advisor to Quandl since last year, and joined the board in July, has spent more than 33 years in the data management industry, and has held senior positions at Interactive Data, Reuters, and Algorithmics, has founded and served as chief executive of consultancies Benton Associates and LakeFront Data Ventures.

Tullett Prebon CEO John Phizackerely has turned to a former colleague from his days at Lehman Brothers and then Nomura to run a new division at the interdealer broker. Sam Ruiz, a former head of equities trading at both Nomura and Lehman in London, joined Tullett as chief executive of its institutional services unit this month, a spokeswoman confirmed. The division he will run was created as part of an internal restructuring, announced by Phizackerely on an August 2 earnings call, aimed at increasing Tullett’s non-bank revenue streams.
