Raise The Macallan Comes to NYC This Week

02.21.2012

Head over to Raise The Macallan’s website now to register, because these events fill quickly: in a weeklong series of private tastings, Macallan brand ambassadors will give scotch aficionados and newbies alike a primer on what exactly makes this Speyside single malt so special.

With a history that’s embedded on the Scottish ten-pound note itself, this highland distillery has established itself as one of the premier whiskey brands. Aged in its trademark sherry oak casks, these scotches have a distinctly rich, complex profile that’s at once flavorful and smooth. Keep an eye out, too, for the Fine Oak range–a newer line of scotches aged in both sherry oak casks as well as American bourbon oak casks.

If you’re lucky enough to snag a seat at these increasingly in-demand tastings, you just may get the ever-friendly and knowledgeable Charlie Whitfield as your tasting’s host. Scottish by birth and newly placed as the North American brand ambassador, Whitfield had an early start as a Macallan fan: “When I was a wee lad, I won a raffle that my grandmother entered me into. The prize was two cases of the Macallan. It would be on my 18th birthday that my father would finally give me my prize, and by then, it was one case of the Macallan…the other case had mysteriously disappeared!”

For those who are new to scotch or who may have had a less-than-pleasant experience with whiskies, The Macallan’s rich, smooth finish may be a good introduction (or re-introduction) for you. Count on the brand’s history and the tasting’s educational aspects to further enrich your knowledge and appreciation, too–in these tastings, there is not an ounce of snobbery or pretense, and the warm atmosphere is instead focused on becoming more of a connoisseur of fine liquor.
