Coinbase has received CFTC approval to launch Coinbase Clearing LLC, our own Derivatives Clearing Organization (DCO). Together with our derivatives broker, a Futures Commission Merchant (FCM) and derivatives exchange, a Designated Contract Market (DCM), Coinbase Clearing LLC completes our full suite derivatives platform.
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) approved the registration of Coinbase Clearing LLC, the first USDC-native clearinghouse. This step completes the full stack of CFTC-regulated derivatives infrastructure at Coinbase. With an FCM (Coinbase Financial Markets, Inc.), a DCM (Coinbase Derivatives, LLC), and now a registered DCO (Coinbase Clearing LLC), Coinbase has the end-to-end infrastructure to directly bring regulated products to market.
With USDC collateral and 24/7 settlement, Coinbase Clearing is purpose-built for the always-on markets of the future.
What this means for Coinbase
Coinbase Clearing gives us a new capability. For the first time, we can create and settle fully collateralized contracts directly. That means faster product development, more efficient operations, and the flexibility to bring new regulated products to market over time.
We will continue to use existing partners to support certain products, including our margined derivatives business and our upcoming launch of single stock perps.
“The CFTC approval completes Coinbase’s end-to-end derivatives infrastructure, enabling us to bring more regulated derivatives products to market with native USDC collateral and 24/7 settlement.” – Molly Abraham, General Counsel, Coinbase
What’s next
Regulatory approval for Coinbase Clearing marks clear, incremental progress on Coinbase’s commitment to expanding access for regulated products and to building the financial infrastructure for the onchain economy. We will look to strengthen the infrastructure that supports our products today and build a scalable foundation for the future.
