Coinbase Upgrades Derivatives with New Matching Engine

Coinbase is rolling out a new high-performance matching engine on Deribit by Coinbase. Capable of processing more than 100,000 orders per second with sub-millisecond matching latency, the engine is designed to deliver faster, more scalable execution. A built-in speed bump on selected instruments is also expected to help liquidity providers quote tighter spreads and rest deeper size over time, supporting stronger liquidity for institutional derivatives traders.

Coinbase is announcing the rollout of a new high-performance matching engine. Built on dedicated infrastructure, the engine can process more than 100,000 orders per second with sub-millisecond matching latency. For clients, this means faster execution, greater scalability and infrastructure designed to support the performance and liquidity demands of institutional derivatives markets.
The rollout brings Deribit onto the same core execution infrastructure as Coinbase International Exchange, marking an important step in building a more unified global derivatives platform.
Derivatives markets demand speed, reliability and the capacity to perform at scale. This new engine strengthens the trading experience for our institutional clients and gives us the flexibility to expand our offering over time,” said Luuk Strijers, Senior Director, Head of International Derivatives at Coinbase.
Built for the next phase of derivatives markets
As global crypto derivatives markets mature, institutional traders increasingly expect platforms that combine performance, liquidity and product breadth.Alongside greater speed and scale, the engine introduces a built-in speed bump on selected instruments. By briefly delaying aggressive orders, it gives liquidity providers more time to respond in fast-moving markets. Over time, that is expected to help market makers quote tighter spreads and rest deeper size, supporting stronger liquidity for clients.Designed to handle high volumes of activity with low-latency execution, the engine combines speed, scale and resilience with market structure intended to support stronger liquidity. Together, these enhancements strengthen the trading experience and provide the infrastructure required to support continued growth.
One engine, a broader platform
Later this year, all Coinbase perpetual futures will also run on the engine. Extending the infrastructure across options and perpetual futures will support a more consistent trading experience, broader product coverage and a stronger foundation for deeper liquidity.
By investing in shared infrastructure across Deribit and Coinbase International Exchange, Coinbase is building a derivatives platform designed to deliver the performance institutional clients expect, strengthen liquidity over time and support further product expansion.
