What was your reaction to winning the award?

I was surprised and honored to receive the Women in Finance Leadership award. As I looked through the list of committee members, prior winners and 2023 awardees, I saw the names of many women who’ve been great mentors, sponsors, clients, colleagues and friends over the years. These women have provided guidance, served as wonderful professional partners and above all else, challenged me to do and be better! I am thrilled to be in the company of people who I admire and am grateful for the recognition.

What makes a good leader?

A good leader inspires their team, clients and community through a combination of business acumen, curiosity, commitment and grace. The best leaders in business, like the best coaches, consistently lift their team’s level of play. I’ve been lucky to work for and with several inspirational leaders who model a strong work ethic, motivate others to think creatively and excel in building strong relationships. When I think about the best leaders I’ve interacted with over time, it’s not always their technical skills which first come to mind. It’s their willingness to go to bat for people they believe in, their sense of humor and their executive presence.

What’s your advice to the next generation of women in finance?

I find that five simple ingredients help when tackling many professional and personal endeavors: work hard, prepare, listen, ask questions and follow-up. You can bolster those five components by surrounding yourself with colleagues and advisors who encourage you to leave your comfort zone. I often need a gentle nudge when deciding whether to pursue something intimidating or new. It helps to have personal and professional friends who can see the bigger picture for you and nudge (or push!) you in the right direction.

Tell us about a passion you have outside the business.

I love to read. I was an English major in college and love to escape into a good book. One of my proudest achievements is raising two children who love to visit the library. For me, giving or receiving a great book recommendation is a fun and joyful way to connect with family and friends. If I did not work in finance, I’d be a middle school English teacher.
