What does it mean to be a champion for STEM?

Kathryn Zhao, Cantor

Being a STEM Champion means advocating for, advancing, and excelling in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). It involves using expertise, passion, and influence to promote innovation, education, and opportunities in these fields. A STEM Champion can take on various roles: advocate (promoting the importance of STEM in solving real-world problems), innovator (contributing to advancements in STEM through research and development), mentor (inspiring and guiding others, especially young people, to explore and succeed in STEM), and problem solver (applying STEM skills to tackle challenges).

Why do you think representation in STEM fields is so important?

Representation in STEM is important because it ensures diversity of thought and opportunity. When people from all backgrounds see themselves represented in STEM fields, it sends a powerful message that these spaces are for everyone – not just a selected few. Research has shown that diverse perspectives lead to better problem-solving and financial results, as different life experiences can inspire unique solutions to complex challenges, increasing success rate. Additionally, representation helps break down barriers, combat stereotypes, and create pathways for future generations to access and pursue careers that drive technological progress and innovation, and help shape the world.

What excites you about the financial industry?

What excites me most about the financial industry, particularly in algorithmic trading, is the dynamic interplay between technology and data. I’m driven by the opportunity to turn market data into actionable insights, optimize execution, and create systems that operate with precision. The fast-paced, ever-changing nature of this industry ensures there’s always something new to learn, keeping me inspired every day.

What is your greatest professional achievement?

My greatest professional accomplishment is the incredible team I’ve built at Cantor Fitzgerald. Bringing together a group of talented individuals and fostering a collaborative environment where everyone thrives has been deeply rewarding. It’s not only about hiring the right people, but also about creating a team culture where their unique skills shine, and together, we achieve goals that none of us could reach alone. Watching the team grow, innovate, and support each other makes me proud every day

Tell us about a passion you have outside the business.

Outside of work, I’m passionate about both reading and traveling. Reading allows me to explore new ideas and perspectives, while traveling lets me experience different cultures and expand my worldview. Together, they fuel my curiosity and inspire me to approach challenges with a broader mindset.
