Alpha Sports: ETFs linked to CME Futures on FutureSports Performance Indexes, with BaseballSharesTM and HockeySharesTM already filed with the SEC ahead of CME Group’s planned September 28 futures launch
REX Financial announced the launch of Alpha Sports Holdings Inc., a new company built to do one thing: turn what happens on the ice, the field and the court into exchange-traded funds. REX ETF Trust has filed registration statements with the SEC for Alpha Sports BaseballSharesTM and HockeySharesTM, suites of ETFs designed to provide exposure to the performance of Major League Baseball and National Hockey League teams.
The ETFs will be linked to CME futures contracts on FutureSports Performance Indexes (FSPI), rules-based benchmarks that convert official team statistics into a single live number. Each team index opens the season at a set number and moves during games as statistical measures add or subtract points. For instance, the FSPI Major League Baseball (MLB) Team Indexes move based on 70 factors, including runs scored, stolen bases, and strikeouts. Indexes reset in the offseason.
The timing follows CME Group’s announcements that it plans to list futures on the FutureSports NHL and MLB indexes, pending regulatory review. Alpha Sports plans to bring those markets to retail investors across America via ETFs.
“The sports industry generates hundreds of billions of dollars a year, but there has never been a liquid, transparent investment product tied directly to what happens in live games,” said Greg King, CEO of Alpha Sports. “Alpha Sports exists to build that product for passionate investors who want to participate in the fortunes of their favorite teams.”
Alpha Sports Holdings Inc., is a subsidiary of REX. BaseballSharesTM and HockeySharesTM are the first planned products; the company intends to extend the model to additional leagues and sports as more sports indexes become available.
